This is a vocabulary page defining some of the commonly heard terms in social media interacting today. Definitions may be a collaboration of various sources for the best and clearest meaning.


Ambient Intimacy: The ability to keep in touch with people with a level of regularity and intimacy that you wouldn’t usually have access to, because time and space conspire to make it impossible. By routinely sharing status updates, photos, observations and ideas with a network of weak ties, we create more and more opportunities for intimacy, without the investment of time that would be required to do this entirely in the physical realm.


Crowdsource: Using your community, followers,  audience to advocate for your product or service. Customers talk to each other troubleshooting, giving tips and recommending products. Created by customer loyalty.


Hypertargeting: The capability to target ads based on very specific criteria. Also called microtargeting.


Influence: The capacity or power of people or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior and opinions of others.


Microtargeting: The capability to target ads based on very specific criteria. Also called Hypertargeting.


Transitive Trust: A higher level of trust derived from a feeling of connection. Someone is more likely to trust another if they know them or have a mutual friend or connection.
